UA Recognizes Randall Undergraduate Research Award Winners
The Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Program recognizes the best research activity conducted by undergraduate students at The University of Alabama. Undergraduate students who have conducted significant scholarly research are nominated by faculty and staff research directors. The recipients and their nominators were recognized at a luncheon in their honor during UA's Honors Week. In 1997, the Randall Publishing Co. and the H. Pettus Randall III family created the Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Program in memory of Henry Pettus Randall Jr., a distinguished UA alumnus and creator of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. UA research faculty members and past winners of the Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award select the winners.

NSF Selects UA Students for Competitive Fellowship
Five graduating seniors at The University of Alabama will participate in the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. In addition, two students from other institutions will be using fellowships at UA The students are among 2,000 NSF Graduate Research Fellows selected from more than 13,000 applicants to receive financial support for graduate studies.

UA Announces Inductees Into Phi Beta Kappa
The University of Alabama has inducted a new group of students into its chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Founded on Dec. 5, 1776, The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation's most prestigious academic honor society. It has chapters at 286 colleges and universities in the United States, 50 alumni associations, and more than half a million members worldwide. Noteworthy members include 17 U.S. presidents, 39 justices of the Supreme Court of the United States and more than 130 Nobel laureates. The mission of The Phi Beta Kappa Society is to champion education in the liberal arts and sciences, foster freedom of thought, and recognize academic excellence. UA's chapter was founded in 1851. Students are elected to membership on the basis of outstanding academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences.

The grand opening of "The Royal Treatment" - which includes two barber's chairs, a hairwashing station, television and two comfortable couches, all enlivened by a bright wall mural celebrating African and African-American culture - was Monday, Jan. 21, at 11:45 a.m. during the university's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

Ribbon-cutting marks opening of 'The Royal Treatment' barbershop, salon and student lounge
Eastern Mennonite University celebrated the opening of its newest student lounge - "The Royal Treatment," an informal barbershop and salon - during its observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The grand opening of "The Royal Treatment" - which includes two barber's chairs, a hairwashing station, television and two comfortable couches, all enlivened by a bright wall mural celebrating African and African-American culture - was Monday, Jan. 21, during the university's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration. Modeled after a barbershop and salon, the space will be managed by the Black Student Union (BSU). Historically, the African American barbershop and salon was, and still is, a meeting place for the community and where grassroots planning and community organization happened during the Jim Crow era and civil rights movement.

Black History Month celebrations led by student initiatives
During February, the Black Student Union sponsored the annual Town Hall on Race, a candid space for members of the campus community to openly discuss and gain awareness of race relations on campus, as well as a film showing of "The Hate U Give"and a talkback. BSU also kicked off a new monthly event, "The Black Box," a showcase of student art and performances hosted in the Campus Center's Black Box Theater. Alumnus Maleke Jones '18, who performs as Meechy Jay, was February's guest of honor. A special worship service that featured Pastor AJ Mosley from Divine Unity Community Church in Harrisonburg, sponsored by BSU and Multicultural Student Services, concluded Black History Month events.

EMU summer cross-cultural students gain global perspective
EMU students have completed their cross cultural study requirements. The cross cultural experience at EMU is a life-changing experience and central to the university's mission to prepare students to lead and serve in a global context. Cross-cultural study has been a part of the core curriculum for over 30 years and is one of the oldest programs in the country. Faculty have introduced students to cultural learning through educational travel in more than 80 locations around the globe.

Newly established Honors College at CCU has more than 700 students
The HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies was established at Coastal Carolina University on Oct. 12, and the 700 students who had been accepted into the University's honors program are now the first students housed in the new college. The HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies will feature many new initiatives and a revised curriculum. It will support students who have ties to majors and departments across campus: from honors students to interdisciplinary studies students, who build their own, innovative academic majors. In addition, the college will continue to support and advise undeclared first-year students as they select and transition into their major.

Participated in the 2018 Carthage Christmas Festival
Yearly, Carthage College invites the community to celebrate the joy of the holiday season at the annual Carthage Christmas Festival, three performances of readings and music in the A. F. Siebert Chapel. These annual concerts are the College's Christmas gift to the community. Tickets to the Christmas Festival have been free since the festival began more than 20 years ago.
